Happy New Year Everyone!

Everyone must have had a fun winter break because classenrollment is down a bit! I also spenttoo much this holiday (and ate too much) and am looking forward to seeing allof you for 2012;). With the MLK holidayon Monday 1/16, I think a few students were having trouble committing to thecurrent schedule so we made a few adjustments!

A few updates on classes to share… all classes starting inthe next few weeks have space available:

Northridge parkbeginning and intermediate obedience course: Our class scheduled to begin tomorrow, Wednesday night 1/11 is postponed, beginning level at7:30pm will be happening on 1/25instead. Currently we have no oneenrolled in intermediate level at 6:20pm so if you don’t want to wait until3/21 ENROLL NOWJ.

Balboa Park Focus onagility (intermediate level obedience course): which was scheduled to startat Balboa park at 7:15pm on Thursday, 1/12, has been cancelled and will resume February 6^th,Monday night instead!

Tarzana ParkBeginning, Intermediate and Advanced obedience: We have small groups for our January 14^th Tarzana beginning andadvanced levels. We will hold this classas scheduled but it willbe an introductory class… we will do anofficial start on 1/21/12 for all three levels, beginning 9:45am , intermediate8:30am and advanced at 11am! Thisshould help those with plans for the long weekend!

West Van Nuys Beginning class(by White Oak and Sherman way…formerly at TAMS pet food class) will be postponed until 1/30 at 10 aminstead of starting Monday 1/16 on MLK day!

Burbank, ColorwestPrinting: Jodyand Bobby are holding graduation for their last intermediate course, which gotrained out numerous times, on Sunday 1/15! Sunday 1/22 will be held as scheduled in Burbank, and has asmall group for rally at noon and for beginning at 9 am! Currently, and no one preregistered forintermediate class at 10:30 am …let usknow if you will be joining us so this group doesn’t get postponed until March25th!

I just got this email from Jody, one of our Trainers, and the trainer who teaches our Rally class.. .HOW EXCITING... CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM:

From Jody:

Just got back from the Long Beach show. Tina and Inga, from my Rally class showed for the first time today and scored a 97 out of a possible 100. She just missed being in the ribbons but did win a HUGE wooden trophy for being the high scoring Kuvasz in Rally!... I was most pleased with the fact that she was able to have fun and felt VERY well prepared for the course. I tend to set hard courses so that anything a student encounters at a show will seem easy in comparison. You should have seen her smiling!!

I had a good show with my Dobie bitch Maisie as well. She won her class yesterday with 99 and was High Score Rally Novice dog. Today we were in 3 way tie for 2nd, 3rd and 4th with a 98 with less than a tenth of a second separating the 3. We ended up with 3rd which was fine as I was not going for time.

Anyway, last Rally class tomorrow and 5th Intermediate tomorrow.

Have a great party tomorrow! Sorry I have to miss it!!

Hi everyone,

Effective in April of 2012, the Board of American KennelClub has approved new Rally regulations. There are somechanges/clarifications of class procedures and judging. Most important thoughis that there are about a dozen new signs added to the current list, several ofwhich are in Novice. You can read all of the new information at the AKC websitehere: http://www.akc.org/pdfs/about/board_minutes/1111.pdf. The Rally info is at the very end of the report. Remember that anythingunderlined is a change from the current rules/regulations.

The new signsare just variants of the skills required by the old signs. The only real changeis the introduction of an early version of a pivot which we started last week.And you’ll have until April to perfect them.

If you have scheduled a private session and I did not show up.(it only happened once that I know of). I am blaming GOOGLE! Yes, I have been trying to automate and use an electronic calendar that allows me to schedule on my phone and on line! It also allows you to see my availability and while there are some glitches it does seem to work for the most part so I am trying to get past the learning curve. please be patient and if I am not there when I am supposed to be call or email ahead just to confirm and I am trying to do the same!

Dog Show Tour OCTOBER 1ST

Ever wanted to go "backstage" at a dog show and see in person some of the unique looking dogs you've seen on TV? Curious about some of the various sports open to you and your dog? Jody has shown dogs for more than 40 years and was an AKC Judge. She'll be exhibiting a Clumber Spaniel at the show. She has promised visits to the grooming areas, some question and answer time with a Professional Handler, a full explanation of how dogs are judged as well as stops at the many vendors of dog food, toys, treats and equipment where great bargains can be found. BEGINNING, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED LEVEL OBEDIENCE CLASSES

We just started our Monday daytime class at 10 am, which will be at Jesse Owens Park in West van nuys. We have a wonderful group of all pups (by the old TAMS PET FOOD, yes they are moving to TAMPA and VANOWEN.make sure to go over and visit after 10/1 or hit the store now for moving sales)!

The Wednesday night NORTHRIDGE PARK CLASS will happen on 10/5 with beginning level class at 7:30 pm, and maybe a 6:20 pm intermediate, if you get your registrations in soon. Beginning class is already filling up . we will not have class on 10/12 because I will be at the APDT conference

The SATURDAY class at Tarzana Park will have all three levels of training (beginning 9:45 am, intermediate 8:30 am and advanced at 11 am) starting on
10/22 . these classes are already filling up as well!

The Sunday classes in our North Hollywood/Burbank location will begin on
10/23 starting with Bobby's beginning at 9 am, followed by Jody's intermediate at 10:30 am, and Rally Obedience at Noon!

Southern Pacific rattlesnakes not rattling a warning... this could not be located on snopes so i could not verify authenticity

From Trina Began – reports to Trina have shown that the snakes are not rattling before striking, so please be careful of yourself and animals. Keep on paths and do not allow animals to stick their noses into brush or holes.
Subject: Important: Southern Pacific rattlesnakes
Please note:
A dog was recently bitten in Garner Valley by a Southern Pacific rattlesnake. The treating veterinarian noted that the venom was neurotoxic and insisted that the snake had been a Mojave Green. The dog's owner, however, has a degree in herpetology and knew positively that the bite came from a Southern Pacific rattler.

The dog developed none of the symptoms associated with hemotoxins; there was no swelling at all. Despite the injection of three vials of antivenom, the dog died.

The dominant species in the San Jacinto Mts (above the pinyon line) is the Southern Pacific. A recent study detected neurotoxins in a 25% of 25 samples. It has also been noted that the species seldom rattles. I have personally removed four Southern Pacific rattlesnakes from my property in recent years; not a single one sounded the characteristic warning rattle.

These developments indicate that the Southern Pacific rattler is far more dangerous than previously thought. The bite is becoming "supertoxic".

Pavlov: we fed the chicken on the opposite side of the road each day at 4p.m. until the chicken's autonomic system actually began causing the chicken to cross the road at 4 p.m. without even questioning the "why"
B.F. Skinner: on prior occasions when the chicken voluntarily crossed theroad, this behavior was followed immediately by a reinforcing consequence.
Cesar Milan: I bullied, chased, poked, and intimidated the chicken until it raced across the road, because I am a strong leader©

Karen’s Version of Ratatouille Casserole
Region Prep time / Cooking time
Provence, Riviera
30 min / 45 min… they lie!
Ingredients
1 lb eggplant (1 large)
1 lb zucchini (courgette) (three small)
Or you can combine squashes to make 2 lb (like add yellow and white)
4 tb olive oil or as much as needed
Optional .. Hardwood smoked bacon (a few slices)
1/2 lb yellow onions (one medium) sliced and peeled
Salt and pepper
2 garlic cloves (or some chopped from jar in olive oil)
Splash of white wine
1 lb tomatoes, firm and ripe
Heinz ketchup!???
Splash of red wine
3 tb fresh Italian parsley
3 tb fresh thyme (fresh produce section combo season pack has thyme..
hard to find separate)
3 tb fresh basil
fresh shredded or shaved Parmesan/reggiano
Buy ingredients at the grocery and gourmet store
need extra large skillet or two and deep casserole dish (like 8x9 or so)

Ratatouille Recipe (serve 6)
Step 1: Peel and slice the eggplant into 1/4 inch slices (for large one, round is ok) or slice on an angle for longer pieces..you want all the vege slices about the same thickness and roundness.. Cut the zucchini into slices and peel alternating…leave long stripes.. Place those vegetables in a bowl, cover with water and let rest for at least 30 minutes (I left and came back in an hour and a half). Drain.
Step 2: original recipe says Sauté the eggplant and zucchini with olive oil (and bacon if desired) in a skillet. One minute on each side. Set aside. I cooked longer and hotter so the veges were browned (not burnt) on each side, be careful not to overcook or let break apart
Step 3: afterward..Cook the onions with olive oil and same bacon (in the same skillet) for 10 minutes over moderate heat. Stir in the garlic and add salt and pepper and splash of white wine if desired,.let cook down a minute while you do step 4.
Step 4: boil the tomatoes for 30 seconds then peel. Cut into slices. Lay them over the onions in the skillet. Drizzle over olive oil and splash of red wine during this tomatoe stewing process as needed, except at the end. Cover and cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Uncover. It was at this point I felt there wasn’t enough sauce to layer with the veges so I squirted in about a tablespoon of ketchup..bryces favorite…then I Poured the juice from the the skillet over the tomatoes a few times.while raising the heat to boil for several minutes until juice has almost entirely evaporated. I tried to keep the tomato slices intact so I could layer them too in the casserole
Step 5: Put a third of the tomatoes mixture in the bottom of a casserole. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the three fresh herbs. Then a layer of the eggplant, then one of squash. Then the second third of tomatoes. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the fresh herbs. Put the remaining eggplant and squash, then the tomatoes and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the fresh herbs. Toward the end I added more ketchup to stretch my sauce a bit.as needed it doesn’t need to be too saucy as the sauces from the squash will mix in also.
Step 6: Cover with foil or lid and put in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Uncover, pour the juice over the vegetables and let cool. if you want you can put it in the fridge now and serve later (either microwave w/parm or do the following)
. Or you can uncover and cook for another 10 -15 minutes with fresh shredded parmesan cheese on top
Serve with croissants to dip in the juice and a nice strong red wine!

Gulliver's Creamed Corn (Karen’s version)
2 (20-ounce) packages frozen corn
1 cup (8 ounces) whipping cream
1 cup (8 ounces) Half and Half
1 teaspoon salt
6 teaspoons sugar
Large Pinch of Nutmeg
Large Pinch of cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons melted butter
2 tablespoon all-purpose flour (more or less)
1. Combine all ingredients, except butter and flour, in a pot and bring to a boil, stir and Simmer 5 minutes.
2. Blend butter with flour to make a paste like pancake batter and add to the corn, mix well and remove from heat.
Serves 8.
Variation: Put finished corn in heat proof casserole, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and place under a broiler until evenly browned.

March 22nd, Sunday at K&D Company from 9 am - 12 noon

Intensive 3-hour training session focusing on Exterior Area Searches and Interior Building Searches only.
Training is geared for those interested in competition and more advanced handling.

Details:
Open only to dogs already trained on odor and/or level II students and above….
Any nose work students are welcome, even if you did not do Nose Work through My Best Friend, as space permits.
10 working spots are available each session (three hours is the length of the workshop for the 10 students).
Audit spaces are available (without your dog) for $28.00 no matter what training you’ve had, or even if your just curious!

Cost is $85 per session (3 hours).

9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. will be workout session for: Exterior Area Searches and Interior Building Searches

The following is an email i received a few weeks ago about puppy mill pups and i am forwarding it to you in blog form.

A couple of months ago I received an email from Yvonne, a wonderful animal loving individual who gets the pet tips and also does alot for the animal rescue community. She told me she had gone into C& C Pet Food in Canoga Park (in the SFV) and she thought they were selling puppies underhandedly in their warehouse. There was no signage so I suggested she get some proof and perhaps alert people to the atrocities of puppy mills http://www.stoppuppymills.org:80/ that happened to be shopping there by putting flyers or notes on their windshields. All this takes alot of time and effort and we all have to work to pay our bills.

Well today I am seething. What greedy bastards. C & C in C. Park now has a full page ad selling puppies in the PennySaver.
Today I am asking all of you to forward the hell out of this email and BOYCOTT this greedy store as well as PETEX on Ventura Blvd. in Tarzana.
